Dr. Alan Smith is a Massachusetts native and grew up in Worcester. He attended Assumption College where he majored in Natural Sciences and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. At the same time, he also attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute as an Army ROTC cadet and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant upon graduation. He then took an educational delay to enter dental school at Boston University's Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry and earned his DMD degree. Upon dental school graduation, Dr. Smith entered military service in the US Army Dental Corps as a general dentist and served in numerous overseas assignments in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Dr. Smith was then selected to attend the University of Washington's periodontal residency program where he earned his Periodontal Certificate and his Master of Science in Dentistry degree. After completing his periodontal training, Dr. Smith continued his overseas military service in Europe before returning Stateside. Dr. Smith served in Afghanistan as Theater Dental Surgeon in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Upon completion of a full military career, Dr. Smith retired from the US Army Dental Corps. Some of his numerous awards, decorations, and badges include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Parachutist Badge, and Expert Field Medical Badge. For his superior service contributions to the broader Army and Medical Department, he was elected to the exclusive Order of Military Medical Merit. In addition to his passion of patient education and providing a full range of advanced periodontal and implant surgical treatment procedures for his patients, Dr. Smith has served in a variety of leadership and educational roles, including as President of the European Association of Military Periodontists, co-course developer, program director, and instructor of the Local Anesthesia for Registered Dental Hygienists Course which the Army adopted service-wide, developer/director/instructor for the Prophylaxis Technician Course, periodontal mentor to general dentists in the Advanced Education in General Dentistry and clinical rotation training programs, and as Chairman for the Quality Improvement, Credentials, and Clinical Quality Management Program Committees. He has lectured internationally.
Dr. Smith has returned home to New England to continue his passion of helping patients with their periodontal and implant needs. A periodontist treats gum and bone disease around teeth and implants. Dr. Smith is committed to listening to patient concerns, educating his patients, putting them at ease, and providing high quality care and treatment options in conjunction with patient goals and objectives. Dr. Smith provides a wide range of periodontal services, including surgical and nonsurgical management of periodontal disease, extractions, grafting, sinus lifts, implants, crown lengthening, frenectomies, and more. In his spare time, Dr. Smith enjoys traveling with his family, caring for their 2 rescue dogs, trying new foods, keeping fit, listening to music, and rooting for the local and Boston sports teams.
